Spring is beautiful, but allergies can make you feel bad. Sneezing, itchy eyes, and stuffy noses can be hard. Here are some ways to feel better:
What Causes Allergies?
- Pollen, dust, and pet hair can make you sneeze. In the Bay Area, tree pollen is high in spring. Oak and cypress trees can release a lot of pollen, reaching 136 PPM.
Medicine Can Help – These allergy medicines are covered by your health plan (with prescription):
- Levocetirizine tablets (Xyzal)
- Fluticasone nasal spray (Flonase)
- Azelastine eye drops (Optivar)
If you don’t have a doctor’s prescription, you can still purchase Claritin (Loratadine tablets) over the counter. Ask your pharmacist or health plan about other choices.
✔ Prevent Allergies – Close windows, shower after going outside, and use an air filter.
✔ Try Cultural Remedies – Herbal tea, local honey, or acupuncture helps.
✔ Talk to Your Doctor – If your allergies are severe or persistent, talk to your Primary Care Provider for a referral to see an allergy specialist if necessary.
